AI Overviews (AIO)

Definition

AI Overviews are Google generated answer blocks above the organic results. A language model synthesises several sources into one answer and links to them. Your goal shifts from ranking first to being cited. Since May 2024 this is the official name of the feature previously called Search Generative Experience.

AI Overviews are not the same as a featured snippet. The snippet quotes a single page verbatim, the AI Overview synthesises several sources into new text. The line to the knowledge panel is just as clear: the panel shows facts about an entity pulled from structured databases, the AI Overview answers a specific question. Search Generative Experience is not a neighbouring concept, it is the former name of the same thing.

Across the DACH region the feature has been rolled out since March 2025, so waiting is no longer an option. It hits informational queries hardest, the ones sitting at the top of your funnel: what is X, how does Y work, which vendors exist. That is exactly where an answer now appears before your page becomes visible at all. Get cited and you gain a link and brand presence. Miss the citation and you sit below the answer, hoping someone scrolls.

The limits are uncomfortably concrete. You cannot buy citations and you cannot steer them directly, Google decides per query whether an AI Overview appears at all and which sources feed it. The same query can surface different sources tomorrow. In Search Console, clicks and impressions from AI Overviews are folded into the standard search report rather than broken out, so you see the effect without cleanly seeing the cause. The most expensive mistake is to treat that as a reason to change nothing and keep producing plain definition pages.

What to watch: write passages that can be quoted as an answer, meaning clear statements with context instead of marketing prose. Source your numbers where they appear, because a model prefers claims it can anchor. Shift resources away from the plain definition question towards content that resists a three-sentence summary: procedures, comparisons, field reports. And track branded queries as an early indicator, because once your brand shows up in answers, direct search for it rises before organic clicks recover. Your SEO work does not end, it moves its target.
