Search Generative Experience (SGE)
Search Generative Experience was the Search Labs name for Google's AI-powered search result format that displays a generated answer with source citations above traditional organic listings. Since May 2024 the feature has been called AI Overviews, and it has been rolled out across the DACH region since March 2025. Instead of ten blue links, Google presents a synthesized summary that informs users directly on the search results page. This fundamentally shifts traffic patterns: clicks migrate from positions one through three to sources cited in the AI answer.
SGE differs from traditional SEO by shifting the game from ranking to citation. While you previously fought for position one, Google's LLM now decides which sources it mentions in the generated answer. This isn't an evolution of Featured Snippets but a different game entirely: the AI synthesizes multiple sources instead of highlighting a single text block. Your content no longer competes for clicks on the search results page but for mention within an AI synthesis.
In day-to-day B2B operations, this means informational queries lose massive direct traffic. When someone searches "What is marketing automation," SGE delivers the answer directly. Users only click if they want to go deeper or buy a solution. Transactional and commercial queries remain more relevant because the AI doesn't make purchase decisions. Your content strategy must adapt: fewer generic explanations, more specific use cases, comparisons, and implementation details that go beyond a two-paragraph summary. Thought leadership and original data become more important because the AI relies on citable sources.
The limitations are real and painful. You can't directly optimize for SGE because Google doesn't disclose selection criteria and changes them continuously. Classic ranking factors still apply, but their weighting shifts. Backlinks and domain authority remain relevant, but factuality, recency, and structured data gain importance. The biggest mistake is dismissing the format as a temporary test phase. That phase is over: as AI Overviews, the feature is a fixed part of Google Search, in the DACH region since March 2025. AI-generated answers are part of search, no longer a lab experiment. If you don't experiment now, you lose months of learning curve.
What to watch for: measure not just clicks but impressions in SGE answers. Google Search Console now reports impressions from generative AI surfaces in a separate report, so far without click or query data. Analyze which query types you get cited for and which you don't. Structure content so individual paragraphs function as standalone, citable facts. Use structured data to make extraction easier for Google. And aggressively diversify your traffic sources: social media, email, direct traffic. Anyone drawing the bulk of their traffic from Google Organic has a concentration risk that AI Overviews is now activating.
