E-E-A-T: Experience, Expertise, Authority, Trust
E-E-A-T stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trustworthiness and is Google's overarching quality framework for evaluating web content. Since the December 2025 Core Update, it applies to all competitive search queries.
Key Takeaways
- ✓E-E-A-T stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness
- ✓Since December 2025, E-E-A-T applies to all competitive queries, not just YMYL
- ✓Experience (first-hand experience) is the newest and strongest signal
- ✓Author profiles with verifiable credentials are mandatory
- ✓E-E-A-T influences GEO indirectly: AI systems primarily cite top-10 sources
E-E-A-T is the central quality concept that governs Google's evaluation of web content. Since the December 2025 Core Update, it's relevant for virtually all competitive search queries, no longer just for YMYL topics.
The Four Dimensions
Experience evaluates whether the author has demonstrable first-hand experience. A travel blogger who has actually been to the described location has more Experience than someone who only summarizes information. Original data, screenshots, case studies, and personal reports are the strongest Experience signals.
Expertise evaluates professional qualifications. For medical topics, this means medical training. For SEO topics, Expertise is demonstrated through precise technical terminology, in-depth knowledge, and verifiable successes.
Authoritativeness measures recognition by others. Backlinks from authoritative websites, citations in professional publications, brand mentions, and industry awards are authority signals.
Trustworthiness is the overarching element. Google evaluates whether a website is transparent, honest, and reliable. Legal notice, privacy policy, clear author identification, and consistent information quality are trust signals.
Implementing E-E-A-T Practically
The most important step is creating complete author profiles. Every article should be attributed to an identifiable author whose profile contains verifiable credentials, links to LinkedIn and other authoritative profiles, and a summary of expertise.
Source citations are the second mandatory element. Every factual claim should be backed with a verifiable source. This strengthens both the trust signal and GEO visibility (plus 40 percent according to Princeton research).
Incorporating personal experiences: Case studies, proprietary data, before-after comparisons, and documented processes demonstrate Experience. This is particularly valuable since AI systems cannot generate this content themselves.
E-E-A-T and GEO
E-E-A-T influences GEO visibility indirectly but strongly. AI systems primarily draw their sources from the organic top 10. E-E-A-T determines which pages rank there. Additionally, AI systems recognize authority signals like expert quotes and source citations as trust indicators and preferentially cite this content.
