Social Media Platforms Compared

Social media platforms compared for DACH B2B: user numbers, ad costs, API access and regulation from LinkedIn to WhatsApp. As of August 2026.

For: Marketing leads, CMOs and performance marketers in DACH B2B companies who have to decide which platforms get budget and editorial capacity and which no longer do.

Definition

A social media platform comparison assesses every channel against five dimensions: addressable audience in your own market, production effort, advertising costs, API access and regulatory risk. The global user count says the least of all, and after this assessment DACH B2B companies are usually left with only a handful of channels that get real budget.

Key Takeaways

  • The German social media market shrank for the first time in 2025: DataReportal counts 64.7 million users, roughly 800,000 fewer than the year before.
  • Ad reach, survey data and official MAU measure different things and must never share a column in any platform comparison.
  • With 24.0 million members in Germany and 20% annual growth, LinkedIn is the only channel that belongs in a DACH B2B budget without further justification.
  • Instagram remains the most used platform in Germany with 40% weekly reach, but lost ground with younger audiences for the first time in 2025.
  • TikTok grows against the market trend with 23.7 million adults, but like Meta it carries ongoing DSA proceedings with a fine ceiling of 6%.
  • Reddit delivers barely any plannable reach in DACH, but it is the most cited domain in AI answers, which makes it a visibility channel rather than a campaign channel.
  • According to vendor benchmarks WhatsApp reaches open rates no other channel matches, but in Germany it costs EUR 0.1131 per marketing message.
  • Regulatory risk and API access belong in every channel assessment, because both feed straight into a channel's running costs.

The German social media market shrank for the first time in 2025. For October 2025, DataReportal counts 64.7 million social media users in Germany, 77.1% of the population, roughly 800,000 fewer than a year earlier. This is not a collapse. But it ends an assumption that held for a long time: that every additional channel automatically reaches additional people.

That shifts the question for marketing leads in DACH B2B. It is no longer which platforms a company has a presence on. What needs settling is this: which channels get real budget in 2026, real editorial time and a named owner? In our experience that list turns out shorter than the existing channel plan. This page provides the numbers behind that decision, plus three factors missing from most platform comparisons: regulatory risk, technical access and whether a channel shows up in AI answers at all.

One note up front, because it decides half the quality of any comparison: the user numbers in circulation do not measure the same thing.

Three types of numbers that never measure the same thing

Sorting a list of platforms by user numbers and deriving a ranking from it usually produces nonsense. The reason lies in the methodology behind the figures.

Two examples show how far apart these run. The LinkedIn figure for Germany comes from LinkedIn's ad tools and refers to registered members, not monthly active users. Then there is daily time spent: the ARD/ZDF-Medienstudie 2025 arrives at a stable 30 minutes of social media per day, while DataReportal reports 5 hours 19 minutes per week for the same population, which works out at roughly 46 minutes a day. Both figures are collected properly. They simply answer different questions, and they must never share a table column.

How these types of numbers differ in detail, and which values suit which planning question, is set out in Social Media Usage Germany 2026: User Numbers for DACH. For the platform comparison here, one rule applies: every figure carries its type with it.

The DACH market in numbers, as of August 2026

Germany. The ARD/ZDF-Medienstudie 2025 measures that 63% of the population aged 14 and over use social media at least weekly, roughly 44 million people. Growth was down to 3 percentage points after 8 percentage points in the previous wave. Daily reach stands at 35%. The study is representative, n=2,512, fieldwork 28 January to 18 April 2025.

Across the individual platforms, Instagram leads with 40% weekly reach ahead of Facebook at 31% and TikTok at 20%. Among 14 to 29 year olds, TikTok reaches 50%. Instagram lost ground with younger users for the first time in 2025 but stays ahead overall.

On the advertising side the picture looks different. For Germany (data as of October 2025), DataReportal reports the following ad reach figures: YouTube 64.7 million, Instagram 31.3 million at minus 2.3%, LinkedIn 24.0 million members at plus 20%, TikTok 23.7 million adults at plus 8.5%, Snapchat 23.0 million, Facebook 22.8 million at minus 11.5%, Pinterest 22.7 million, X 19.0 million and Messenger 9.9 million at minus 18.2%. The X figure rests on X's own advertising data and should be read as an upper bound, not as a measured user count.

Austria. For early 2025, DataReportal counts 7.30 million social media identities, 80.1% of the population, of which 6.55 million are aged 18 and over, plus 2.70 million LinkedIn members. Instagram and Facebook each sit at roughly 3.25 million ad reach. Among teenagers, the Jugend-Internet-Monitor 2025 from Saferinternet.at shows a different order: WhatsApp 87%, YouTube 80%, Snapchat 74%, Instagram 73%, TikTok 72%. The infographic accompanying the study shows that Facebook fell from 28% to 20% among 11 to 17 year olds, a drop of 8 percentage points.

Switzerland. The Social-Media-Studie Schweiz 2026 from Bernet Relations and ZHAW (published in February 2026) records that practically all Swiss organisations use social media as a matter of routine and that LinkedIn is the most used platform, followed by Instagram, YouTube and Facebook. The ZHAW Content Marketing Studie 2025 (N=924 Swiss companies) adds: social media posts are the most used content marketing instrument at 64.9%, and 42.3% name the production of high quality content as their central difficulty. That is the real bottleneck in almost every channel plan. Channel selection is rarely the problem; the production capacity behind it is.

One more data point belongs here because it shows the role platforms play in how people inform themselves. The German part of the Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2025 measures that social media is the most used online news source at 33%, one in two among 18 to 24 year olds, and that 17% of that age group encounter news exclusively there. Generative AI chatbots, by contrast, are used weekly for news by only 4%, rising to 9 to 10% among younger people.

LinkedIn: the only channel that needs no justification

LinkedIn is the channel that needs no justification in DACH B2B. 24.0 million members in Germany with 20% annual growth, 2.70 million in Austria, and in Switzerland the most used platform among organisations. No other channel covers decision makers, a specialist audience and candidates at the same time.

The limitation concerns not the platform but the sender format. Richard van der Blom's Algorithm Insights Report 2025, an independent analysis of 1.8 million posts, measures a drop in organic views of roughly 50% and company pages that now reach only 1 to 2% of their followers. A self-selection bias is possible, and the multipliers doing the rounds ("comments count 15 times", "employee advocacy delivers 561% more reach") are industry folklore or vendor figures without an independent basis. The direction is unambiguous regardless: personal profiles carry, company pages no longer do. What that means for content distribution and posting mechanics is covered in Social Media Algorithms & Distribution.

On the budget side, B2B money concentrates on the same channel. Dreamdata puts LinkedIn's share of B2B advertising budgets in 2026 at 41%. The associated CPC, CPM and CPL benchmarks are largely global or US based and cannot be transferred to DACH unchecked; reliable values and their limits are set out in Paid Social & Performance Marketing.

YouTube: reach and citability in one channel

YouTube has the largest ad reach in Germany at 64.7 million and leads the video field in the ARD/ZDF-Medienstudie 2025 with 46% weekly usage. The actual reason to take YouTube seriously in 2026 is a different one: it is a search engine and one of the few sources large language models cite from. An Ahrefs analysis of 75,000 brands from December 2025 measures the strongest single correlation with visibility in AI answers for YouTube (0.737).

The price is production. A YouTube channel that serves search intent needs transcripts, chapters, clean titles and a frequency most B2B teams underestimate. If you do not have the capacity, you are better off not running the channel at all and putting the resources into one that gets by with fewer assets.

Instagram and TikTok: reach among younger audiences, with different risks

Instagram remains the visual channel with the widest reach in Germany, but it is losing ground. Minus 2.3% ad reach, 40% weekly reach and, for the first time, losses among young audiences. For B2B, Instagram is primarily an employer branding and brand channel, rarely a lead channel.

TikTok grows against the market trend: 23.7 million adults in Germany, plus 8.5%, which corresponds to 33.9% of all adults. In Austria, according to the Jugend-Internet-Monitor 2025, 72% of 11 to 17 year olds use the app. The channel runs on a pure interest graph, so organic reach is possible without a follower base. That makes it attractive for recruiting and brand building among young audiences.

Against that stands a risk no other large channel carries in this form. On 24 October 2025 the European Commission preliminarily found that TikTok and Meta breach the DSA transparency obligations on researcher data access, with fines of up to 6% of worldwide annual turnover. In December 2025 the Commission accepted binding commitments from TikTok on advertising transparency, and February 2026 brought the preliminary finding that TikTok's addictive design breaches the DSA. Both preliminary findings are still undecided. For channel planning that means TikTok is testable but cannot carry a growth plan on its own. The full channel assessment including resource requirements and the state of the proceedings is in TikTok Marketing in DACH: Reach, Fit and DSA Risk.

Reddit: a citation source, not a reach channel

Reddit belongs in this comparison, but not because of its reach in DACH. The German figure on record is an ad reach value, not a count of active users. DataReportal itself points out that the two can differ considerably. That makes the number useless for planning. The platform's strength lies elsewhere.

A Peec AI analysis of 30 million sources across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews (spring 2026, US prompts) identifies Reddit as the most cited domain. A Semrush analysis of 150,000 AI citations arrives at Reddit 40.1%, Wikipedia 26.3% and YouTube 23.5%. Across 129,000 domains, SE Ranking measures that brands with a strong Reddit presence move from 1.8 to roughly 7 ChatGPT citations, around four times as many.

These numbers are volatile, more so than any reach figure. Across 230,000 prompts, Semrush documents that ChatGPT's Reddit citation rate collapsed from just under 60% in early August 2025 to around 10% by mid September, at the same time as a change to Google's search parameters. Anyone putting budget behind Reddit visibility is betting on a number that can shrink to a sixth within six weeks. LinkedIn is gaining in parallel: Profound analysed 1.4 million citations between November 2025 and February 2026 and sees LinkedIn as the most cited domain for professional queries, with a jump from rank 11 to rank 5 at ChatGPT.

In practice: Reddit is a channel for community presence and AI visibility, not for campaigns. In our experience promo posts survive there for hours at best. What a presence tolerated by moderators looks like, and what the API costs, is set out in Reddit Marketing for Business: Building Presence Without Promo. The optimisation side for AI search engines is covered in the SEO knowledge base, for instance under Perplexity Optimization: Reddit Dominance and ML Reranking.

WhatsApp: highest open rate, toughest price tag

WhatsApp is the channel with the widest gap between perception and use in B2B plans. The user figures for Germany diverge sharply: Statista conservatively counts 44 million active users, Business of Apps arrives at roughly 60 million. Worldwide, according to Meta based analyses, more than 200 million businesses use WhatsApp Business products. The frequently quoted open rates of 95 to 98% against 20 to 25% for email come from a vendor benchmark, not from an independent study. The order of magnitude holds regardless: no other channel comes close.

The price is real and high in Germany. Since 1 July 2025 Meta bills per message instead of per conversation, and the rates for Germany stand at EUR 0.1131 per marketing message and EUR 0.0456 for authentication. Free of charge are replies within the 24 hour service window as well as the 72 hour window after click-to-WhatsApp ads. On top comes the business solution provider's mark-up, usually in the range of a few tenths of a cent up to around one cent per message.

Two limits belong in every plan. First: full checkout and payment inside the app exist currently only in markets such as India and Brazil, not in Germany. Second, the data protection side. EU providers such as Chatarmin advertise explicitly with a Frankfurt server location, data held in the EU and ISO 27001 certification; that is provider self-disclosure and belongs in the review before you sign a contract. Details on pricing, BSP selection and hosting are in WhatsApp Business API Costs: Pricing, Open Rates, EU Hosting.

The side effect: whatever gets shared over WhatsApp and direct messages appears in no analytics tool and lands as direct traffic. This dark social gap can only be approximated through survey fields in the form and through modelling, not through tracking. The measurement methodology for that is in Social Media Analytics, KPIs & Measurement.

Facebook, X and Threads: what is left of the second tier

Facebook is losing double digits in Germany: minus 11.5% ad reach to 22.8 million, Messenger even minus 18.2%. In the survey data Facebook still holds second place with 31% weekly reach, with a falling trend. Engagement is low and stable: Socialinsider measures an average of 0.15% that falls to 0.13% by Q4 2025, with status posts reaching 0.20%. For the same period Emplifi arrives at median values of 1.4 to 2.5%, because a different denominator underlies them. No single value works as a target here.

X is the channel with the worst ratio of reported reach to actual effect. 19.0 million ad reach in Germany sounds solid but comes from X's own advertising data. On engagement, X sits at 0.10 to 0.12%, the bottom end of all major platforms, and Rival IQ measures a 48% decline for 2025 against the previous year, the steepest drop in the platform comparison.

Threads, by contrast, is growing fast. On 16 June 2026 Meta reported 500 million monthly active users; according to Similarweb data, Threads was ahead of X for the first time in January 2026 with roughly 141.5 million mobile daily users against roughly 125 million. In Germany the channel is still small: 5% weekly usage, 11% among 14 to 29 year olds, 8th place. Threads Ads have been rolled out worldwide since January 2026. Through the Instagram link a test is cheap, and that is the only strong argument for the channel.

How these three platforms come together into a single budget decision is covered in Facebook Marketing, X and Threads: What Role Remains in B2B.

Secondary channels: six platforms, one honest cut list

Pinterest: 631 million monthly active users globally according to the Q1 2026 quarterly figures, plus 11% against the previous year. In Germany 22.7 million ad reach with a female share of 72.4%, in Austria 2.50 million with a 73% female share. Worth it for products with a visual angle and purchase intent, irrelevant for classic B2B.

Snapchat: 23.0 million ad reach in Germany; in Austria, according to the Jugend-Internet-Monitor 2025, 74% of 11 to 17 year olds use the app, 89% of them daily. A channel for very young B2C audiences and apprentice recruiting, otherwise not.

Discord: 26% of Austrian teenagers in the Jugend-Internet-Monitor 2025, down 6 percentage points. Relevant for community building in gaming, tech and developer contexts, not a reach channel.

Bluesky: the transparency report of 29 January 2026 names 41.41 million registered users after growth of just under 60% in 2025. The daily active base sits at around 3.5 million according to Backlinko data, under a tenth of the registrations. The platform carries no advertising. Relevant for media, science and political communication, not for reach.

Mastodon: under 1 million monthly active users worldwide across roughly 10 million accounts (as of summer 2025, an estimate, because decentralised networks allow no uniform count). Practically meaningless for commercial marketing, but strategically relevant in Germany: since October 2020 the Federal Data Protection Commissioner has run the social.bund.de instance, where the federal government, the Bundestag, the BSI, the DWD and customs are among those present. If you handle public sector communication, there is no way past it.

Xing: 21 million users in DACH according to New Work SE's own figures (as of September 2025), fully owned by Hubert Burda Media since June 2025, with declining revenue. As a content and thought leadership channel Xing no longer holds up; as a recruiting channel for traditional industries and regional roles it still has a niche. The full cut-or-keep decision for all six channels is in Alternative Social Media Platforms in DACH: Which Are Worth It.

What the API side tells you about a channel

Technical access is almost always overlooked in channel comparisons, even though it feeds straight into operating costs. A channel you cannot fill and evaluate automatically costs staff time permanently.

Four values from the table decide feasibility in practice. YouTube grants 10,000 quota units per day; that is enough for publishing, not for broad search queries. Instagram allows 100 API posts per account in 24 hours, TikTok names roughly 15 posts per account per day in its Content Sharing Guidelines, on top of which come 6 requests per minute per user token. Reddit caps free access at 100 queries per minute and charges around USD 0.24 per 1,000 calls above that.

Three details deserve a second look. LinkedIn's Community Management API allows 500 calls per app and 100 per member in 24 hours in the development tier, which quickly proves too little for monitoring applications; full access through the Marketing Developer Platform is partner-gated and, according to Phyllo's estimate, available from USD 699 per month, with an approval process running over months. At X, rate limits and billing are separate: billing happens per access, from USD 0.001 per owned read and USD 0.20 per post with a link, while the limit only governs frequency. You can stay within the limits and still generate cost, or take a 429 without having reached your monthly volume. And if you are still reading older guides on pulling LinkedIn data, check the date: the scraping provider Proxycurl was shut down on 4 July 2025 after a lawsuit from LinkedIn.

The full comparison with quotas, prices and the legal position is in Social Media API 2026: Access, Limits and Costs per Platform. How to build publishing or agent automation on top of it is covered in AI & Automation in Social Media Management.

Regulation belongs in the channel assessment

Three sets of rules act directly on channel choice in 2026, and all three are operational questions, not side topics for the legal department.

DSA: the ongoing proceedings against TikTok and Meta are described above. Relevance for planning: a channel whose operator faces proceedings with fines of up to 6% of worldwide turnover is not a channel to build an annual strategy on alone.

DMA and tracking: Meta's pay-or-consent model is the subject of proceedings by the European Commission. In December 2025 Meta committed to offering EU users an option with less personal data and limited ad personalisation from January 2026. In our assessment that will feed through to custom audiences and match rates over the medium term; if you are building Meta audiences, prepare server side tracking and alternatives for the case that the base gets smaller.

EU AI Act: the transparency obligations under Article 50 apply from 2 August 2026. AI generated or manipulated content has to be labelled recognisably, visible to people and machine readable. The platforms have already rolled out labels of their own, but that does not release you from your own obligation. The timeline with all deadlines is in EU AI Act: Timeline and Deadlines 2024 to 2027.

On top come the national topics: the legal notice requirement on profiles, advertising disclosure under the UWG and, in Switzerland, the revised Data Protection Act. This page is not legal advice, and the Austrian and Swiss specifics in particular are worth checking with a specialist lawyer.

Four steps to a decision

Step 1: audience before platform. Check first where your buying group actually is, using survey data rather than ad reach figures. For DACH B2B decision makers the answer in most cases is LinkedIn plus one search channel.

Step 2: count production capacity honestly. The ZHAW figure from Switzerland (42.3% name the production of high quality content as their central difficulty) describes the real bottleneck. A channel you cannot staff with weekly production does not belong in the plan.

Step 3: operating costs including technology. Factor in API access, tool costs and message prices. At WhatsApp the price per message decides whether whole campaign types make sense; at X the price per read decides the monitoring strategy.

Step 4: assess risk and define thresholds. Set out in advance what would change your assessment. One example as a rule of thumb: if the TikTok proceedings lead to usage restrictions, the channel gets reassessed. If Reddit's citation rate in AI answers keeps falling, the budget moves to YouTube and LinkedIn.

The most common mistake in DACH channel plans is not the wrong platform. It is the fifth platform that nobody runs properly any more and that nobody cuts either.

Social Media Usage Germany 2026: User Numbers for DACH

Social media usage in Germany stands at either 44 or 64.7 million people, depending on the method of measurement: DataReportal counts 64.7 million user accounts for October 2025 (77.1% of the population), while the ARD/ZDF-Medienstudie 2025 uses a survey and finds that 63% of the population aged 14 and over use social networks at least weekly. Both values are correct, but they measure different things and must not be set against each other.

TikTok Marketing in DACH: Reach, Fit and DSA Risk

TikTok marketing in DACH means running a pure interest graph channel with 23.7 million adult users in Germany: reach comes from the recommendation system, not from the follower base. In return the channel demands continuous content production, and it faces several parallel DSA proceedings from the European Commission (as of August 2026). For DACH B2B it is an employer branding and awareness channel, not a lead channel; the channel decision depends on audience, production capacity and tolerance for regulatory risk.

Reddit Marketing for Business: Building Presence Without Promo

Reddit marketing for business means taking part in discussions in topically relevant subreddits as a recognisable company instead of scattering posts: in our experience, promotional posts are usually removed by moderators and automated filters within hours. The value lies not in direct reach but in the fact that Reddit threads are among the most frequently cited sources in generative search systems. This effect fluctuates heavily and therefore does not carry a large budget.

Facebook Marketing, X and Threads: What Role Remains in B2B

In DACH B2B in 2026, Facebook marketing is no longer a channel for organic community building, it is a paid and retargeting surface for older audiences. Social Media API 2026: Access, Limits and Costs per Platform

A social media API is a platform's official programming interface through which companies are allowed to publish content and read out data. In 2026 the platforms differ less in functionality than in the barrier to entry: LinkedIn gives its marketing APIs only to approved partners, TikTok requires a client audit before public posting, YouTube and Meta work with daily allowances, X and Reddit bill per request.
