Definition

Alternative social media platforms are the channels beyond LinkedIn, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and WhatsApp: Pinterest, Bluesky, Mastodon, Xing, Snapchat, Twitch and Discord. For companies in the DACH region, only the ones that serve a concrete purpose are worth it: Pinterest for visual e-commerce, Bluesky and Mastodon for PR in the media and public sector, Xing for recruiting. None of them works as a reach channel.

Key Takeaways

  • Pinterest is in our assessment the only secondary channel with direct revenue logic: 22.7 million ad reach in Germany, 2.50 million in Austria, an ad audience that is 72.4 and 73.0 per cent female respectively, and users who search with purchase intent.
  • Bluesky has 41.41 million registered users, but only around 3.5 million daily active ones according to a secondary analysis by Backlinko (estimate, as of October 2025); the platform does not work as a reach channel, but it does work as a PR channel for media and science.
  • Mastodon was below one million monthly active users worldwide in summer 2025 and is relevant in Germany mainly where the public sector communicates: the BfDI has run social.bund.de since October 2020.
  • Xing reports 21 million users in the DACH region for September 2025, a company figure with no stated activity level; as a content channel the network is in our assessment finished, while as a job board with a Kununu connection it remains usable in traditional industries.
  • Snapchat reached 74 per cent of teenagers in Austria in 2025 according to the Jugend-Internet-Monitor, 89 per cent of them daily, which makes it suitable for young B2C audiences and employer branding, not for B2B.
  • Discord lost 6 percentage points among Austrian teenagers within a year, down to 26 per cent according to the Jugend-Internet-Monitor 2025, and remains a tool for community building in gaming and tech contexts.
  • Ad reach, survey data and official user numbers from quarterly reports are different types of figures and must not be combined into a single ranking.

Channel audits almost always end at the same list: Pinterest, Bluesky, Mastodon, Xing, Snapchat, Twitch, Discord. Somebody on the team set up a profile there years ago, and somebody asks once a quarter whether you should be doing something with it. On top of that come new social media platforms demanding attention every few months. The cost of a secondary channel rarely sits in the media budget. It sits in editorial planning, approval loops, community management and reporting, which is the scarcest resource on the team. So the right opening question is not whether a platform has users, but whether it serves a purpose that an existing channel does not already serve better.

When a secondary channel pays off

Four criteria are enough for the decision, and all four have to apply.

Audience overlap: The people you want to reach are there in relevant numbers and in the right mode. Registered accounts do not prove that, daily usage does.

Format reuse: The channel can be filled with material that is produced anyway. If you need dedicated graphic formats for Pinterest and dedicated moderation for Discord, you pay twice.

A purpose of its own: The channel delivers something that LinkedIn, Instagram or your own website does not. Reach on its own is not a purpose.

Measurability: After three months you can say whether it worked. On ad-free platforms without usable analytics that is hard, and that is an argument against them.

As a rule of thumb from practice: a secondary channel without a fixed slot in the weekly plan produces dead profiles. A profile whose last post is a year old does more damage than a missing profile. How the major channels are distributed across the region is shown by the user numbers for Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Pinterest for business: the secondary channel with revenue logic

Pinterest is the outlier among the small channels because the usage itself is commercial. People searching there are planning a kitchen, a wedding, an outfit or a menu, so they are early in the decision process. That puts the platform closer to a search engine than to a social feed.

Globally, Pinterest reported 631 million monthly active users for the first quarter of 2026, up 11 per cent on the previous year and the tenth consecutive quarter of double-digit growth (Pinterest, Q1 2026 quarterly report). In Germany the ad reach is 22.7 million users, and 72.4 per cent of the ad audience is female (DataReportal Digital 2026, data collected October 2025). In Austria it is 2.50 million users, 31.2 per cent of the population aged 13 and over that is reachable with ads, of whom 73.0 per cent are female (DataReportal Digital 2025). For Switzerland there is no reliable individual figure.

Keep Pinterest if your product is visual, falls into one of the strong categories (fashion, interiors and home, DIY, weddings, food, beauty, travel) and you sell online. Cut the channel if you offer B2B software, industrial goods or services with a long sales cycle that need explaining. The purchase-intent advantage only pays off if there is a shop at the end, which is why Pinterest belongs in the context of social commerce and social shopping rather than in the standard editorial plan.

Bluesky and Mastodon: PR channels, not reach channels

Bluesky grew sharply in 2025: from 25.94 to 41.41 million registered users, an increase of almost 60 per cent (Bluesky Transparency Report, published on 29 January 2026). The decisive figure is not in there. Daily active users stood at around 3.5 million in October 2025 according to the secondary analysis by Backlinko, roughly a twelfth of the registrations. That is an estimate, not an official metric, and it is the reason Bluesky fails as a reach channel. On country distribution the analyses diverge: SocialPilot puts 5.02 per cent of Bluesky traffic in Germany for April 2026, fourth place behind the USA, the United Kingdom and Japan, while Backlinko, citing the Bluesky CEO, names the USA, Japan and Brazil as the largest markets.

What still makes Bluesky interesting: the German-speaking journalism, science and tech community has settled there in noticeable density, and the platform carries no advertising. There is no paid layer to compensate for weakness, and no campaign metric with which to justify the channel to your management. If you are considering Bluesky as a replacement for X, first settle what role X and Threads still play in your own mix: see the assessment of Facebook, X and Threads in B2B.

Mastodon is smaller still. Under one million monthly active users worldwide across roughly 10 million registered accounts, as of summer 2025. Because the network is built decentrally, there is no official overall metric, and the available figures depend heavily on the measurement method. Whether Germany is the largest Mastodon country hangs on exactly that: ThinkImpact assigns over 27 per cent of Mastodon users to Germany, while the traffic analysis by Marketful puts the USA ahead for the mastodon.social instance.

The real reason to take Mastodon seriously in DACH is institutional. The German Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information launched the social.bund.de instance in October 2020, where the federal government, the Bundestag, the BSI, customs, the national weather service DWD and the supreme federal courts are represented, among others. bawü.social, run by the state commissioner in Baden-Württemberg, followed in January 2021, and in 2022 the European Data Protection Supervisor launched the EU Voice pilot with around 20 EU institutions. If you communicate as a public authority, a research institution or a public-sector body, you have an audience there. If you sell products, you have none.

Xing: a recruiting remnant, not a content channel

Xing states 21 million users in Germany, Austria and Switzerland for September 2025, a company figure from New Work SE without independent verification. How many of those users are active is not disclosed. Xing has belonged entirely to Hubert Burda Media since June 2025, and according to the published financial figures, revenue at New Work SE fell from 313.4 million euros in 2022 to 305.6 million euros in 2023.

As a content and thought leadership channel, Xing is in our assessment no longer viable. There is no reason to mirror the same posts there that run on LinkedIn, because the interaction density is missing and the time spent on the second profile delivers more elsewhere. The full authority comparison of the two networks is covered in the article on LinkedIn vs. XING in the DACH region.

What remains is recruiting. Xing works as a job board with a Kununu connection, and it works where LinkedIn is weak: commercial roles in mid-sized companies, skilled trades and blue-collar occupations, regional vacancies away from the big cities. The pragmatic version looks like this: keep the company profile current, syndicate job ads from your applicant tracking system, answer Kununu reviews. No separate editorial plan, no separate reporting.

Snapchat, Twitch and Discord: narrow purposes, young audiences

Snapchat is regularly underestimated in DACH because nobody in the executive suite uses it. The ad reach in Germany is 23.0 million (DataReportal Digital 2026, data collected October 2025). In Austria, according to the Jugend-Internet-Monitor, 74 per cent of teenagers used Snapchat in 2025, 89 per cent of them daily (survey of 405 teenagers aged 11 to 17). That makes the channel usable for young B2C brands and for employer branding around apprenticeships and training places. For B2B there is no use case.

Twitch and Discord are not audience channels, they are community tools. Both are in our assessment gaming-heavy and strongly male, though the Jugend-Internet-Monitor reports no figure for that. For Discord the Austrian survey shows 26 per cent usage among teenagers in 2025, a drop of 6 percentage points on the previous year. A Discord server is worth it if you already have a user group that wants to talk to each other, for instance around software, games or tech products. It does not work as an acquisition channel, and an empty server is worse than none.

Why the numbers are not directly comparable

The table invites a ranking, and that is exactly what would be wrong. The numbers in this article come in four different types. Ad reach is the platform's own estimate of how many accounts can be reached with ads, in our assessment including duplicate accounts. The Jugend-Internet-Monitor is a survey with a small sample and an age-limited population. The 631 million from Pinterest come from the company's official quarterly report. The 21 million from Xing is a company figure with no stated activity level. Line these values up next to each other and calculate a league table from them, and you get a number without meaning.

Then there is volatility. On small platforms single events land at full force: Discord lost 6 percentage points among Austrian teenagers within a year, and Bluesky grew registrations by almost 60 per cent over the same period without the active user base following. With Mastodon even the base figure depends on the method, because the network consists of thousands of independent instances. Every number in this field needs a date next to it, otherwise it is decoration within six months.

How to test a secondary channel without burning budget

Write the hypothesis down: who is to be reached there, with which format, with which goal. One sentence is enough, but it has to be falsifiable.

One format instead of a channel concept: one recurring format for three months, built from material that already exists. No dedicated production budget, no new role on the team.

Define the stop criterion in advance: number, deadline, consequence. Without a stop criterion a test runs on indefinitely, because nobody wants to be the one who ends their own project.

Close it properly: when you cut a channel, post a final message pointing to the active channel, keep the legal notice current, secure the handle. A profile that was deliberately closed reads differently from a forgotten one.

In our experience, of the seven channels covered here rarely more than one survives this test in most DACH setups, and which one it is depends on the business model, not on the trend. Where the major networks sit alongside them is set out in the comparison of social media platforms. The most expensive option is the middle ground: seven profiles, each half maintained, none measured.

FAQ

Which alternative social media platform is most worth it in the DACH region?
Pinterest, provided your product is visual and sold online. The platform reaches 22.7 million people in Germany as ad reach and 2.50 million in Austria, and usage is driven by purchase intent rather than entertainment. For B2B services, industrial goods or software that needs explaining, Pinterest delivers almost nothing.
Is Xing still worth it in 2026?
Not as a content and thought leadership channel. Xing states 21 million users in Germany, Austria and Switzerland for September 2025, a company figure from New Work SE without independent verification, and the company discloses no activity level. The network remains useful as a job board with a Kununu connection, above all for commercial and blue-collar roles in traditional industry.
Bluesky or Mastodon: which makes more sense for companies?
Both are PR channels, not marketing channels. Bluesky is the better choice if you want to reach German-speaking journalists, academics and the tech public, because the active community there is denser. Mastodon is practically only worth it for public authorities, public-sector institutions and research, because that is where the German official instances such as social.bund.de sit.
Which companies is Pinterest interesting for in Germany and Austria?
For brands in fashion, interiors, DIY, weddings, food, beauty and travel with an attached shop. The audience is strongly female: 72.4 per cent of the ad audience in Germany and 73.0 per cent in Austria. If your target group is male or purely professional, Pinterest is the wrong channel.
Is Snapchat relevant for companies in the DACH region?
Only for very young audiences. In Austria, 74 per cent of 11 to 17 year olds used Snapchat in 2025 according to the Jugend-Internet-Monitor, 89 per cent of them daily. In Germany the ad reach is 23.0 million. For B2B communication there is no use case there.
Is it worth testing new social media platforms early?
Only with a stop criterion. A test on a new platform costs editorial time above all, so decide in advance which number has to be reached by which deadline. Bluesky shows why that is necessary: registrations grew by almost 60 per cent in 2025, while the daily active user base stayed at a fraction of that according to secondary analyses.
What do I do with profiles on platforms I cut?
Do not simply leave them standing. Post a final message pointing to the active channel, keep the legal notice and contact details current, and hold on to the handle so nobody else takes it. A profile with a clear ending looks professional, a profile whose last post is two years old does not.
